Finding Refuge After Running Away from Chaos

Finding Refuge After Running Away from Chaos
Casey came to us as a 14 year old runaway, telling us, “My mom would go on drinking binges for months, and we’d argue all the time. I just couldn’t take it anymore. I wouldn’t come home for days until I thought I might be over.” Casey was simply trying to survive and salvage the rest of her childhood. Unfortunately, she, like so many others, found herself on the streets in order to escape the violence and neglect at home. Instead of remaining on the streets, Casey was welcomed into one of our youth shelters called Currie House. There, our counselors helped her heal emotionally and learn how to handle her dysfunctional family situation at home. This became a powerful turning point in Casey’s young life. Now 17, Casey is living back at home with two of her four sisters. She’s looking forward to graduating from high school and plans to attend nursing school. Even more exciting: extremely inspired by the help she received at our youth shelter, Casey returned as a volunteer to help troubled youth weather their own crises.
